Taking a holiday abroad has changed enormously over the last three decades. Where once holidaymakers were given the choice of a couple of hotels or apartments, now the range of accommodation on offer covers every type of budget and taste.
As with many other destinations, Lanzarote accommodation has diversified to cater to a huge variety of tourists. One of the main areas that has grown within the island accommodation sector is that of villas in Lanzarote, with an extensive number of good quality properties situated in semi-tropical gardens with their own swimming pool.
In Puerto del Carmen, where Lanzarote tourism first really took off, one of the most exclusive areas of the town is now a haven for self-catering visitors. The holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen tend to be concentrated in Los Mojones, an enclave on elevated ground that gives wonderful sea views from all the properties found here.
Nearly all of the villas in Puerto del Carmen have mature gardens, planted with bougainvillea, palm trees and hibiscus flowers. And whilst all have swimming pools, many also have extras such as hot-tubs and carefully maintained interiors that offer guests a home from home.
The southern most resort on the island also has a wide selection of this style of accommodation. As it is significantly newer than Puerto del Carmen, the holiday villas in Playa Blanca are on the whole of strikingly modern, rather than of a more typical Spanish design.
And while the island itself has created a plan for urban development that aims to limit the impact of tourism and commercialism, holiday villas in Lanzarote lack for nothing. The vast majority come fitted with all mod cons, including ultra sleek kitchens with ice-machines and dishwashers.
The latest gadgets in home entertainment also feature heavily in holiday villas, so that parents have a plentiful supply of electronic games and internet access to keep their children amused. This also lessens the amount of must-have items that holidaymakers have to bring with them.
The final main resort is the most northerly. The holiday villas in Costa Teguise make a great base for families who like to get out and explore, as many of the island’s main attractions are to be found in the centre and north of Lanzarote. Many of these villas are located within a couple of minutes walk of the main beach in the resort at Las Cucharas.
